Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the most common questions I receive but please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions.

What is the casting process?

Using a seaweed based material called alginate which is widely used in the dental industry and safe to use on the most delicate skin  I create an impression. Only taking a couple of minutes to set it allows a quick and detailed impression to be made,  I then gently remove the foot/ hand from the mould.

I always take more than one mould to ensure there is a good enough cast, after your appointment it is then prepared with plaster and I create your beautiful keepsake.

I have multiple frame and paint options so I can create a truly unique gift and will be able to show you these during your appointment. Alternatively feel free to discuss options with me at the time of booking and don't forget to look at Facebook and Instagram for more examples of my work.

If I don't see a design I had in mind on your website can you create a bespoke casting?

Yes definitely, I always aim to create casts and frames that are truly special and bespoke to each individual, so please discuss with me any ideas you have at the time of booking.

Also take a look at my Facebook and Instagram pages for more pictures of the work I have done.

How should I prepare for a casting?

I often hear parents worry that their baby may be restless during the casting, but as a mum of two little ones myself and after casting 100's of babies over the years I have lots of experience in making both you and baby feel completely comfortable during each casting.

For baby casts it is recommended that they wear a baby grow or short sleeve vest that can be rolled back to avoid any moulding getting on their clothes. It is also worth bringing extra milk (as I can take castings during both bottle or breast feeding), as well as dummies or toys depending on age to help if your little one does become unsettled. It is not a problem if your baby is asleep during the process and the best thing about how we take the moulds is that they can be cuddled by you throughout.

So that no visible impression marks are on the skin it is recommended that socks or tight trousers are removed at least an hour before the appointment as this may mean they show up on the plaster cast.

I always make sure clothes are protected with a plastic sheet or that they are out of the way, however if any residue does get on then it is easily washed off.

Is the casting material safe for my skin?

Yes, a material called alginate is used which is non-toxic, biodegradable and safe for skin, including babies. It is specially formulated to create amazingly detailed, high quality body castings whilst being gentle and safe.

How long is the casting process?

Appointments are scheduled for an hour but each casting only takes 2 minutes. I allow more time to discuss design options and ensure I make a casting completely personal and bespoke to you.

Can you make more than one cast from each mould?
Unfortunately not, each mould does not allow more than one cast to be created as it is destroyed when revealing the plaster cast.  If you’d like more than one of each cast, please let me know when booking and I’ll take extra moulds.

How do I book a casting?

Please contact me through the contact form on my website or drop me a message on Facebook/Instagram to arrange a convenient appointment.

We take bookings months and weeks in advance and often have limited availability close to the time, so it is recommended to book an appointment at least 4-6 weeks prior to your due date or preferred casting age. Once you have secured your slot it gives you peace of mind that you have a guaranteed appointment with us in your desired timeframe. We know babies don't always like to arrive on time, so we are completely flexible with your dates and once baby is here you can contact us and move your appointment if needed.

What is the best age for a casting?

Any age, babies can be cast from days old. A common misconception though is that casting is only for babies, however because of the products we use we can cast any age from young children to adults, achieving the same highly detailed finish.

When is payment due and what payments methods are accepted?

A non-refundable deposit of £25 is due to secure your appointment. The deposit goes towards your final order and is not an additional cost. The good news is we do not need to take full payment all in one go, as only a minimum of 50% of your total order is due at the casting session and then the remainder isn't due until your castings are ready (approx. 8-10 weeks later). I accept cash or bank transfer.

How long will it take to receive my casts?

Usually casts are ready to collect within 8-10 weeks.

Where do the castings take place?

In the comfort of my home in the beautiful village of Gamlingay on the Bedfordshire/Cambridgeshire border.
